Our Story

Hi, I’m Raquel and I’ve always been focused upon good nutrition and overall health, but managing these two focuses has been far from easy whilst trying to lead a busy working life. I’m also one of the many (many) parents throughout the world who has faced the all-too common problem of tiny picky eaters who refuse to eat anything that looks remotely healthy.

Overcoming these two challenges is where the story of Kuali begins, and it would be the superfood seed Amaranth that would be the amazing answer to both – providing for a food that my whole family enjoyed and indulged in.

Our Story

Where Kuali all began

My daughter Sofia, 10 and my son Dante, 3, have both been subject to notoriously precise standards when it comes to their food preferences, which came to a head once my youngest began solid foods. He would, quite simply, refuse any and every form of food – his growth began to slow and the importance for good, healthy foods became all the more vital.

It’s an age old problem yet it was one that I was certain would be surmountable with a trip to a large supermarket where there would be something that was both healthy and tasty. Seems simple, right?

However after searching (and searching!) the fruits of my frustrating labor seemed anything but forthcoming – there was literally no product range (or even a single product) on the market that provided for simplistic, tasty food that I’d be anywhere near happy feeding my children.

Where Kuali all began

So what was the answer

I was determined to overcome this issue. So I returned to tried, tested and taste packed recipes that I had learn from my time living in Mexico. A favorite of mine were snacks created from amaranth (a super nutritious seed), although getting my hands upon this seed in the US proved impossible, so I brought packs back in my luggage each and every time I visited Mexico (as well as whenever my friends or family visited!).

I got creative with amaranth, mixing the seed with other superfood ingredients and then adding sweetening agave syrup – and the consensus from my previously picky eaters? Well, they loved it! In fact, so in favor was it that my daughter would take it to school, where her friends would ask where they could find it.

I didn’t know it then but this was the very humble beginning of Kuali and from this point onwards simplicity, natural and nutritious food was my focus.

 So what was the answer

The name for our brand – Kuali, is a Nahuatl word, stemming from the Ancient Aztec language. It literally translates to mean good and edible. This seems like a wonderfully simplistic notion to define our brand – although today we’ve achieved much to go beyond merely edible to be something that is most definitely as delicious as it is full of goodness.

Today we are harnessing the flavor and simplicity of amaranth for all – from frustrated parents for their super picky eaters, to the health conscious men and women who, quite simple, care about what they feed their bodies.

We’ve teamed the power of the amaranth with a range of superfood ingredients that delivers a holistic range of benefits – and within our simple snack bars there lies a wealth of protein, vitamins and minerals.
